I already have pet insurance.  Can I still join Scallywags?

Yes.  If your pet is already insured elsewhere we recommend that you continue your existing insurance for accident and sickness treatment and join Scallywags for your preventative treatment only.

You can, of course, choose to transfer to Scallywags insurance when your existing policy is due for renewal but remember that we are not able to cover any condition from which your pet suffered before the date of the transfer.  If your pet has any preexisting condition you would be better off remaining with your existing insurer.

What happens when my pet reaches the age of 10 ?

Pets aged 10 and over are no longer eligible to take Scallywags insurance as new members.  Pets who are already members can continue their insurance for the rest of their lives although the death benefit which covers euthanasia and cremation will no longer apply. On reaching the age of 10, your pet's insurance premium will be reviewed, in consultation with your vet, and may be subject to small increase.  This is to take account of the increasing risk of illness which comes with advancing age.  If you wish to keep your monthly payments to a minimum, you will be offered the alternative of "accident only" cover at a reduced monthly cost.  The choice is yours. This only applies if you have taken out Scallywags Pet Insurance.  Pets can join the Scallywags Preventative Scheme at any age.

What if my pet needs treatment in an emergency ?

Under normal circumstances you should always take your pet to the veterinary practice through which you joined Scallywags.  If  you have to consult a vet other than your own in an emergency - perhaps when you are away from home or outside normal surgery hours - you will probably be asked to pay in full for any treatment given.  All you need to do is send the receipt to us, with a completed claim form.  Phone 01386 442722 if you need help in making a claim.  This only applies if you have taken out Scallywags Pet Insurance

Referrals

If your vet refers your pet to a specialist for treatment for an insured condition, the cost will be covered by Scallywags up to the limits of your policy.  Depending on the arrangement your vet has with the specialist, you may be asked to pay for treatment.  If this happens you can reclaim the cost from us.  Whenever possible we will try to arrange to settle the account directly with the specialist or your own vet. This only applies if you have taken out Scallywags Pet Insurance

What if I move house?

If you will still be able to take your pet to the same vet then you need only tell us your new address.  If you are moving out of the area and will need to register with a new vet, contact us in advance and we will let you know of any "Scallywag" vets in the area. If you are able to register with one of these we will arrange the transfer of your membership to your new vet.
If there is no Scallywag vet in the area or you choose to register with a vet who does not use the scheme you will have the option of switching to our insurance only scheme to maintain your insurance cover.  (If there is no Scallywag vet in your new area, why not recruit one?  We are always happy to talk to vets about introducing the scheme to their practice) Contact us by post, fax or email

When my pet dies ?

Sadly, we are all faced with this unfortunate situation eventually. If your vet has to put your pet to sleep, before it is 10 years old, the cost of euthanasia and cremation will be met by Scallywags, subject to policy conditions and limits.  If your pet dies in an accident and your vet is not involved you may still face a charge for cremation or disposal of remains.  In this case you should send the bill, with a covering letter, to us.  After the age of 10 we will only pay for euthanasia arising from an accident, not as the result of an illness.

While we try to ease the pain of losing your pet by dealing with the associated costs, Scallywags does not cover the purchase price of your pet or the cost of replacement.  This only applies if you have taken out Scallywags Pet Insurance
